Sunday 16th Oct.2011 – walk to the top of the Plomb du Cantal (1855m)
sunny and warm :)
Woke up to condensation for first time in weeks and frost on the grass
outside! Also the sound of cars screeching up in the car park followed
quickly by gunshot again! The hunters had arrived – some with their
kids. Stephen saw one of the camouflaged hunters shoot a tiny black bird
then take a photo of it! We treated ourselves to pancakes for breakfast
– lots! We set out in our fleeces at 10 to climb the Plomb du Cantel
1856m! It was a rocky scramble on the path up past the ski drag lift out
of Prat du Bouc, the poles for green and blue runs and those lovely cows
that look like they are wearing eye make up:) We were soon taking off the
fleeces as the sun was really warm! We carried on up the path and were a
bit concerned when some French walkers behind us went on a different path
and were headed for another peak. They turned round though so we were
pleased we had stayed on the right path. The scenery was really
spectacular and set off by the stunning deep blue sky:) We reached the top
after two hours and after looking at the tables of orientation had our
snack of walnuts, apple and stuck together chocolate biscuits! We had a
good look over to the ski resort on the side of the mountain – Le Lioran
and round the deserted lifts and even a cable car! We walked down partly
on a path and partly on the green run:) There were several people doing
the walk but not enough to spoil it. We saw lots of Black redstarts and
some buzzards too. We went off the path on the last bit to walk along the
little stream which tumbles over rocks just beneath the van. I took some
more of my favourite blurred water photos of the waterfall and got back at
the van at 3 – 5 hours after we left. Took our much needed cuppa down to
the side of the stream and read our books until the sun disappeared. We
washed the La Franqui sand off the windows of the van with water from the
stream because it is difficult to see the lovely view through them at the
moment! Walked up to the other side of the village just before sun set
then returned to the van, got our pjs, socks and fleeces on ready for the
inevitable chilly night. Lovely tinned casoulet for tea:) Excellent 5
star day!
